Lavinia Fontana was born in Italy and became one of the most important portraitists in Bologna during the late 16th Century. Fontana’s works were admired for their vibrant colour and the detail of the clothes and jewelry that her subjects wore. She enjoyed much success and was eventually invited to Rome where she became a portraitist at the court of Pope Paul V.
