Art from the Roman Republic was greatly influenced by the Greek art of Magna Graecia in Southern Italy. These groups of Greek colonies, such as Cumae, were highly prosperous during the period of Etruscan domination of central Italy. It was during this period that fresco decorations thrived in villas and state buildings of the Mediterranean world. The hierarchical society of the Roman state provided great wealth and allowed art to flourish.
