Prolific artist Claude-Joseph Vernet once said that others could paint nature better than he, but none could paint a better picture. Vernet’s inclusion of human figures in the foregrounds of his natural scenes never seems contrived, as evident in this work which imagines an idealized Mediterranean port at the end of the day.
