Santa Catalina, c.1620, Oil on Canvas

Vicente Carducho was born in Florence and apprenticed under his older brother Bartolomeo, still as a young boy; he journeyed with his brother to Madrid in 1585 to make their fortune. It was there that he became prolific and influential within the Madrid court. Vicente painted religious matter while introducing naturalism into his works of art, as seen here with Saint Catalian.
