Louis de Silvestre, son of the official artist to the Grand Dauphin, was a student of his father, and other esteemed painters. Made court artist to Augustus II of Poland, then director of the Royal Academy of Arts, he was later granted a generous pension by Louis XV. The painting features Andromache, wife of Hector, kneeling before Odysseus, who demands her son.
