Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin was born into an impoverished family of shoemakers in the late 19th century. As a young man, serendipity gave him an opportunity to study art in Saint Petersburg and then to Munich and Paris to further his vocation. His Mother of God painting from 1914 was influenced by his early career as an icon painter.
