Max Beckmann was classified as an Expressionist yet he disavowed the label for himself and disliked the art of those that embraced it. Beckmann was associated with the “New Objectivity” in the 1920’s. “The Deposition” is a modernist take on the many medieval and Renaissance pieces depicting the removal of Christ’s body from the cross.
