Willem Blaeu was the father of cartographer Joan Blaeu, his son being the first mapmaker to incorporate the heliocentric theory of Copernicus. This engraving from Johannes van Loon’s atlas is a remarkable map of Avignon from the early 1600’s, showing the layout of the city that was still under the rule of the Pope at the time.
