Forbidden Lover, c.1932, Oil on Canvas

Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Mead Schaeffer began his career creating illustrations for classic books, then turned his talent to making illustrations for mass-market magazines. Schaeffer lived in Vermont towards the end of his life in the same town as fellow illustrator Norman Rockwell. “Forbidden Lover” uses an interesting blend of colors to conjure a forbidden rendezvous after a masquerade ball in Venice.
