Born in Minnesota, Gil Elvgren studied at the American Academy of Art before embarking on a career as a painter of pin-up art for the promotional and apparel company Brown & Bigelow, which also employed Bill Medcalf. This whimsically titled Elvgren is the type of image of women used to sell anything from beer to boats in mid 20th-century.
