French painter and decorative artist Philippe Chaperon studied under an architect for a time and went on to paint many theater sets for operas of his day, and produce the decoration for the casino at Monte Carlo. This design is for the libretto “Sapho” by Gounod, based on the novel by Alphonse Daudet about a tragic young woman’s finding and losing love.
