Empress of Britain, c.1930, Lithograph on Fine Paper

This poster tantalized viewers with the prospect of Atlantic crossings aboard the 40,000-ton Empress of Britain. Starting with her maiden voyage in May 1931, the “Atlantic Giantess” provided trans-oceanic passenger travel until 1939’s outbreak of World War II. The fastest ship from Britain to Canada, it was also the largest. The poster trumpeted its size by depicting the ship adjacent to a seemingly tiny locomotive.
