Symbolism, Art Nouveau and Pointilism were among styles in which the Dutch-Indonesian academically-trained artist Jan Toorop worked. His preferred styles ranged from Impressionist to lifelike. In this monochrome rendering, Toorop delivers 20th Century touches to a work displaying elements of Javanese primitive art. Along with Van Gogh and Mondrian, Toorop was among the most important Dutch artists of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.
