Sandro Botticelli was an Italian painter of the Renaissance. During his lifetime he was one of the most acclaimed painters in Italy, being summoned to take part in the decoration of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Botticelli's posthumous reputation suffered until the late 19th Century; since then his work has been seen to represent the linear grace of Early Renaissance painting.
