Dutchman Willem Wissing studied under his countryman Peter Lely in London. After his master’s death Wessing established his own studio with assistant Jan van der Vaart. As Henrietta and Mary were royal nieces and the daughters of an important Parliament member, this painting served as a notice to the world that the two maidens were soon available for marriage.
