French painter Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun was court portraitist to Marie Antoinette and ultimately transitioned from the Rococo to Neoclassicism with the changing political and aesthetic winds. Here we see her rendering of two noblewomen along with children in a warm and affectionate rendering, which the Salon called a homage to motherhood and friendship when it was first shown in Paris.
