Orientalist artist Ettore Forti was expert at genre scenes set in the ancient Roman world, full of patricians, aristocratic ladies, classical architecture, and mosaics. Such works enjoyed great popularity partly due to the recent discovery of frescoes from lava-entombed Pompeii. More than one of Forti paintings features a merchant and noble female customers, as seen here in The Carpet Merchant.
