Jan Steen trained under the German history artist Nicolaes Knupfer in Utrecht, and later Steen and Gabriël Metsu founded the painting Guild of St. Luke’s in Leiden, Steen’s hometown. Steen developed a great talent for expressive, colorful, and perceptive genre scenes, well-executed, thoughtfully composed, and delightful for the eye, such as this painting of social frivolity.
