John Everett Millais was one of the three founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, along Rossetti and Holman Hunt. Millais created this depiction of the heroine of Boccaccio’s Decameron at nineteen, an exemplary painting of fine color, subject matter and symbol detail. Later in life, the artist gravitated to dynamic Realism by the later 19th century.
