Artist and poet Yashima Gakutei was the illegitimate son of a samurai who became a virtuoso in the art of ukiyo-e, literally “pictures of the floating world”, woodblock prints of various genre subjects. In this work, The Geisha and the Tsuridaiko, (Large Drum) the artist’s incredible talent for artistic whimsy and emotion is profoundly evident.
