Cranach began to flourish in 1504 when he was appointed as a court painter by Frederick the Wise. Here Cranach has portrayed Saint Barbara according to legend as she is executed by her heathen father Dioscorus when she refused to recant her Christian faith. Luxuriously dressed, she seems to calmly accept her fate as Dioscorus raises his sword to behead her.
