Tyrolean Neoclassical landscapist Joseph Anton Koch was a proponent of “heroic” pastoral painting, after training under Asmus Jacob Carstens and careful study of French artists Poussin and Lorrain. Though his influence on nature art was great, Koch died as a pauper. This Koch portrayal of the doomed Greek king features foreground figures and classical ruins in his emblematic style.
