Tyrolean Neoclassical landscapist Joseph Anton Koch was a proponent of “heroic” pastoral painting, after training under Asmus Jacob Carstens and careful study of French artists Poussin and Lorrain. Though his influence on nature art was great, Koch died as a pauper. This Koch work features foreground figures and a majestic landscape in a biblical motif from Genesis.
