Geneva-born artist Jean-Étienne Liotard was a versatile painter of many subjects but came to specialize in scenes of ordinary life in the Ottoman Empire after making a journey to Istanbul, presaging the Orientalist style which later emerged. This maiden has been posed as the Huntress Goddess Diana, complete with bow, in a conceit common to the age.
