French painter and intellectual Charles-Antoine Coypel was the son of the artist Antoine Coypel and grandson of Noël Coypel. Coypel was adept at designing “cartoons”, sketches for tapestries (his for the renowned Gobelins works). This well-bred couple’s dual portrait is eminently traditional, its pose utterly conventional, but humanity is yet evoked in the eyes and faces of the pair.
