Hendrik Goltzius was born in Germany but was active in Holland for his career as a draftsman, printmaker, and artist, and most notably the premier engraver of the Netherlands region. Goltzius is recognized as a Mannerist genius whose plates involved all of the acumen needed for a Golden Age canvas, such as this likeness of a proud burgher.
