Dutch master Gerard De Lairesse was a renowned art theorist, teacher to painter Jan van Mieris, and a lover of music and Classical plays. His books had a significant effect on Jan de Wit and other later artists. De Lairesse imagined a grouping of ancient Greeks here in an "Allegory of the Sciences" a popular Baroque motif of the 18th century.
