Austrian born Friedrich Gauermann was one of the first proponents of the Veristic style dedicated to nature in all its diversity. In his youth, Gauermann studied art at the Academy of Vienna and ultimately he was elected to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He is remembered for his great talent in detailed drawing and his atmospheric use of light on canvas.
