Jan Steen trained under the German history artist Nicolaes Knupfer in Utrecht, and later Steen and Gabriël Metsu founded the painting Guild of St. Luke’s in Leiden. Steen developed a great talent for expressive, colorful, and perceptive genre scenes, well-executed, thoughtfully composed, and delightful for the eye, such as this painting of a dancing couple.
