Starting with the Tudor court portrait artists in the Late 16th century, then evolving into what is commonly referred to as the classical age of British art which began around 1700 and flourished throughout the 18th century. This period was dominated by the closely contemporary figures of Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, and Thomas Gainsborough, with Joseph Wright of Derby.
