1900 thru 1935
Expressionism was a modernist movement that originated in Germany in the early part of the 20th century. This radical art was now meant to come forth from within the artist, rather than from a depiction of the external visual world. Expressionist often employed swirling and exaggeratedly brushstrokes in their paintings, which were meant to convey the turgid emotional state of the artist reacting to the anxieties of the modern world.
